LMD is the name given in France to the harmonisation of academic degrees throughout the European Union. It stands for 'Licence (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree), Masters and Doctorate'.
Objectives :
- to make it easier for students to move within the European Union
- to make it easier to compare the systems of higher education in Member States
- to increase the value of European higher education throughout the world
the principle :
Un découpage en 3 niveaux d'études supérieures : chaque niveau d'étude (ou grade) est atteint par l'acquisition de crédits européens ECTS, et non plus par la validation d'années d'études.
30 ECTS credits are equivalent to one semester
Higher education is divided into three levels (or degrees), each of which is attained by acquiring European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. Years of study are no longer accredited.
-Bachelors (three years of higher education): awarded with 180 credits.
- Masters (five years of higher education): awarded with 120 credits after a Bachelors.
- Doctorate (eight years of higher education): awarded after research work lasting at least three years and defence of a thesis.
